The FTC and the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) have both issued warnings about a significant rise in advance fee loan scams. These schemes target individuals with poor or limited credit histories by posing as legitimate lenders and promising guaranteed loan approvals regardless of financial background.
How the Scam Works:
Fraudulent operators advertise loans with no credit checks required and request upfront “insurance,” “processing,” or “security deposit” fees before releasing funds. Once the fee is paid, the promised loan is never disbursed and the operator becomes unreachable. The FTC notes these scams frequently spread via social media advertisements and unsolicited text messages, making them appear credible and widespread.
Verification Red Flags:
- Guaranteed loan approval regardless of credit history
- Upfront fees required before any funds are released
- No verifiable regulatory registration or physical address
- Pressure to pay via wire transfer, cryptocurrency, or gift cards
- Contact initiated through unsolicited messages or social media ads
How to Protect Yourself:
Always verify a lender’s licence through your state financial regulator or the NMLS Consumer Access database at nmlsconsumeraccess.org. Legitimate lenders never require fees before releasing approved loan funds. If targeted, report the incident to ReportFraud.ftc.gov (US) or ActionFraud.police.uk (UK) immediately. The sooner a report is filed, the greater the chance of limiting harm to other potential victims.
What This Means for Borrowers:
No legitimate lender guarantees approval or collects money upfront. If an offer sounds too good to be true — especially for borrowers who have been declined elsewhere — treat it as a scam until independently verified through official regulatory channels.
